Add The Lab to your desktop/home screen

  1. Open Google Chrome internet browser
  2. Type in thelab.groundfloorlabs.co.za into the URL bar and press enter (this will direct you to the GFL platform
  3. Open the Chrome menu in the top right of the window
  4. For a PC:
    1. Hover over “More tools”
    2. Click “Add to Desktop”
    3. Check the “Open as window” checkbox
    4. Click “Add”
    5. A shortcut will appear on your desktop
    6. You will now be able to double click the shortcut to take you directly to thelab.groundfloorlabs.co.za
  5. For a tablet/cellphone:
    1. Click “Add to Home screen”
    2. Click “Add”
    3. A shortcut will appear on your Home screen
    4. You will now be able to click the shortcut to take you directly to thelab.groundfloorlabs.co.za

How to register

  1. Go to thelab.groundfloorlabs.co.za in your internet browser (preferably Google Chrome)
  2. Click the “Sign Up” button
  3. Fill in your username, password, email and the rest of your profile details
  4. Remember your username and password – you will need these to login to the platform
  5. Click the “Complete Sign Up” button
  6. Wait until one of our administrators activates your account
  7. If your account does not get activated after 2 days, please contact Groundfloor Labs at info@groundfloorlabs.co.za or phone 078 578 3904

How to log in

  1. Go to thelab.groundfloorlabs.co.za in your internet browser (preferably Google Chrome)
  2. Click the “Log In” button
  3. Type in your username (or email address) and password in the relevant fields
  4. Click the “Log In” button
  5. If your account has not been activated within 2 days of your registration, please contact Groundfloor Labs at info@groundfloorlabs.co.za or phone 078 578 3904

How to find your courses

  1. You will be directed to your courses page when you log in
  2. If you have navigated away from the courses page, click on your username in the top right hand of your screen.
    1. A dropdown menu will appear
    2. Click on “Courses”
    3. You can access your statistics, your inbox, your notifications and other parts of your profile from this dropdown menu

How to start a course

  1. On your courses page you will see a the courses that you have been enrolled in
  2. A course may have an image and a brief descriptor associated with it
    1. There will be a “Start Course” button next to each of your new courses that will take you to the start of the relevant course
    2. There will be a “Continue Course” button next to the each of the courses you have already started that will take you to the last section you have completed of the relevant course

The makeup of a course

  1. Courses will be built with various elements, including text content, video content, quizzes, interactions and assessments
  2. The elements will be presented to you in short sections
  3. At the end of each section, or unit, your progress will be saved

How to navigate through a course

  1. Marking units complete
    1. To move on to the next section, or unit, you will need to mark the unit that you are currently viewing as complete
    2. Click the “Mark this Unit Complete” button to complete a unit
    3. The next button will appear to allow you to navigate to the next unit
  1. Sidebar (Course outline)
    1. The course sidebar shows the course outline, i.e. all the units, quizzes and assessments in sequential order
    2. You will be able to navigate through the course by clicking on any of the units quizzes or assessments in the sidebar
    3. Some courses may limit your progress and only allow you to move sequentially through the course. In this case, you will only be allowed to navigate to the units, quizzes or assessments that you have already completed
  2. Previous and next buttons
    1. You will be able to navigate through a course using the “Previous” and “Next” buttons
    2. The “Previous” button will take you to the section immediately before your current section
    3. The “Next” button will take you to the section immediately after your current section
    4. The “Next” button will only appear once you have completed a unit

How to complete quizzes

  1. There may be quizzes in a course to assess your understanding of the content
  2. Quizzes are made up of questions
  3. The beginning of a quiz may have some information about the upcoming questions
  4. Click the “Start Quiz” button to start the quiz
  5. If a course is timed, you will be prompted to confirm that you are starting the quiz. If you confirm, a timer will start (the time will be allocated by the course administrator).
  6. You will be taken to the questions in the quiz
  7. There are various types of questions that you may encounter
    1. True or False
    2. Multiple choice – one correct answer. These questions have circular radio buttons to select the correct answer
    3. Multiple correct – more than one correct answers. These questions have square check boxes to select the correct answers
    4. Sort answers – drag and drop the answers to arrange the list in the correct order
    5. Match – drag and drop to match the answers
    6. Fill in the Blank – type the correct answer into the blank space
    7. Dropdown select – choose the correct answer from a dropdown list
    8. Small text – short, qualitative text answer
    9. Large text – long, qualitative text answer
  1. Click on the “Start Quiz” to go to the first question
  1.  Answer the question and click “Next Question” to move forward
  2. You can skip through the questions by clicking through the question list (the answered questions will turn green as you go through them)
  3. Once you have answered all the questions, click on the “Submit Quiz” button
  4. You will be asked to confirm your submission. If you have not answered all the questions in the quiz, you will be prompted to complete the remaining questions before submitting
  5. When a quiz has been submitted you can click the “Next” button to continue with the course or the “Check Quiz Results” button to see how you did
    1. The “Check Quiz Results” section will show you your score for each of the sections the quiz (some questions will require an instructor to grade your answers before you are see your scores)
    2. In some cases, you will be able to retake the quiz. This will reset your scores for that particular quiz and you will be able to start again. The number of retakes you will be allowed will depend on how many the course instructor has allowed
    3. You can click the “Back to course” to continue with the course

How to complete interactions

  1. Some courses may include game-like interactions that add a more practical element to the training.
  2. Wait for the interaction to load and then click the play icon to start the interaction
  3. Follow the instructions within the interaction frame
  4. There are several types of interactions you may come across:
    1. Hotspot – these interactions require to click on an object or an area as per the interaction instructions. Clicking the correct object or area will allow you to progress
    2. Drag and Drop – these interactions require you to “pick up” or “grab” certain objects, “drag” them to a desired location and then “drop” them on another object or space.
      1. If you’re using a computer and a mouse, you can complete a drag and drop interaction like this:
        1. Move the mouse pointer to the object you want to drag
        2. Press, and hold down, the button on the mouse to “grab” the object
        3. Keep the button down, move the mouse to “drag” the object to the desired location
        4. “Drop” the object by releasing the button
      2. If you’re using a phone or a tablet:
        1. Use your finger to press down on the object you want to drag
        2. Keeping your finger on the screen, slide your finger along the screen to “Drag” the object to the desired location
        3. “Drop” the object by lifting your finger off the screen
      3. Walk throughs – these interactions require you to interact with a person. You will be given scenarios and then choices to make as you carry out a conversation
    3. Once you have finished the interaction, click the “Mark this Unit Complete” button to move on

How to finish a course

  1. When you have completed all the units, quizzes, interactions and assessments within a course, you will be able to “Finish” the course. This submits and locks in your results and progress. Click on the “Finish Course” button to close off the course
  2. You will not be able finish the course if you have not completed all of the sections within the course

Prerequisite courses

  1. A prerequisite course is a specific course that you must complete before you can take another course.

You will be notified which courses you need to complete in order to complete another course.
